1、陶粒砂具有很高的压裂强度，主要用于油田井下支撑，以增加石油天然气的产量，属环保产品。此产品利用优质铝矾土为原材料烧结而成，是天然石英砂、玻璃球、金属球等中低强度支撑剂的替代品，对增产石油天然气有良好效果。
2、压裂支撑剂的用途：石油天然气深井开采时，高闭合压力低渗透性矿床经压裂处理后，使含油气岩层裂开，油气从裂缝形成的通道中汇集而出。用高铝支撑材料随同高压溶液进入地层充填在岩层裂隙中，起到支撑裂隙不因应力释放而闭合的作用，从而保持高导流能力，使油气畅通，增加产量。实践证明，使用高铝支撑剂压裂的油井可提高产量30－50％，还能延长油气井服务年限。
3、压裂支撑剂的性能指标：陶粒支撑剂必须要求能承受足够的机械强度，承受压裂过程和岩层产生的强大的闭合压力，如果支撑的强度不够，就会被压碎，这样就会影响油、气的导流能力。所以支撑剂对耐酸碱度、浊度、体积密度、视密度均有严格的要求，还要求圆度、球度要好，圆度越好，导流能力要好。
4、陶粒支撑剂分类：1.）按颗粒大小（粒径）分类： 按中石油行业标准，支撑剂的粒径分11个规格，常用的有（20/40目，850—425μm）、（30—50目，600—300μm）、（40—70目，425—212μm）等3种规格。
2.）按密度分类
通常按体积密度和视密度综合将支撑刘分为3类 低密度：体积密度/视密度≤1.65g/cm3/≤3.00g/cm3 中密度：体积密度/视密度≤1.80g/cm3/≤3.35g/cm3 高密度：体积密度/视密度＞1.80g/cm3/＞3.35g/cm3
3.）按抗压强度分类
通常分52mpa、69mpa、86mpa，此三种统称高强。为示区别，行业内逐渐把抗压强度大于86mpa的称作超高强度或超强度。
